Essay on marble chips |
|
|
This is the first 1,000 characters of 197 words (0.79 pages) in the essay titled marble chips
If a reaction isn t going very fast, one of the first things to try is heating it up. This usually gets the reaction going but why? Well, there are two reasons.
At higher temperatures, the particles are generally moving faster. This means they collide more often, so there are more collisions per second. Now, you must have collisions to get reactions going, so more collisions means more potential reactions between particles, so the reaction rate will rise. So the first reason for higher temperatures raising the reaction rate is that higher temperatures means faster particles means more collisions. If you are not sure about collisions and reactions, review the collision theory lesson.
In the lesson on the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, you learnt about the speeds of particles in a gas. The same general principles apply in solids and liquids too. Some particles move slowly, most particles move at medium speeds and a few move fast. The faster the speed the fewer particles there are. At higher temperatures the particles tend to move faster. Although there are very few particles at the highest speeds, the number of them rises rapidly as the substance gets hotter.
