Revenge is not Sweet
Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights revolves around the Earnshaw family and the orphan Mr. Earnshaw brings to live with them. Mr. Earnshaw names the orphan Heathcliff and hopes his family will treat Heathcliff as if he is an Earnshaw. Despite his father’s wishes, Earnshaw’s son, Hindley, does not welcome Heathcliff with open arms. In fact, Heathcliff and Hindley immediately become foes. On the other hand, Heathcliff and Earnshaw’s daughter, Catherine, become very good friends and eventually fall in love. The growth of their relationship seems to be going smoothly, until Catherine meets a refined young man named Edgar Linton. Catherine takes an interest in Edgar primarily because of his differences from Heathcliff, and before long her interest turns to love. Despite her remaining love for Heathcliff, Catherine marries Edgar, thus breaking Heathcliff’s heart. Trying to mend his broken heart, Heathcliff seeks revenge on Edgar for stealing Catherine. Showing the extremes Heathcliff will go to get revenge for his loss of Catherine, Heathcliff thinks to himself, “I will tear his [Edgar’s] heart out and drink his blood” (Bronte142). Heathcliff’s revenge eventually consumes him, causing him to hurt people he hates and even worse, people he loves. Through the pain Heathcliff causes, Bronte disproves the saying, “Revenge is sweet” (Thomas Southerene).
