Golding VS Hook
After Reading William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and Watching Harry Hook’s Movie there is much to be said for both, I feel strongly that the film missed many key points and didn’t so much capture the intensity of the book. Reading the book first made me feel like the story had a point however the film didn’t so much capture Golding’s mind set.
First off In the beginning of the film they are all acquainted and it misses the first conversation between Piggy and Ralph which builds upon the whole book to make Ralph’s and Piggy’s relationship seem better and that makes Piggy’s death much more Drastic, although you actually get to see it happen in the movie, Golding’s language describes it vividly enough for me. Another crucial point is that in the film a captain of the plane is still alive and hauled on to shore and is there with the kids for many days before running off and becoming the beast, this wrecks the books vision of an island totally inhabited by children only! Another point that I can think of off the top of my head is Simon’s encounter with the pigs head, I feel that the movie completely missed the whole point of the beast, it just made it seem like somebody said something about a beast out of the water and then the next thing you know their killing Simon. The Christ like visions that Golding paints in your mind is also left out in the movie.
