I believe that NAFTA should stay in Mexico. It is vital for the growth in the value of the Mexican peso. Not many people are sure what exactly NAFTA does. It reduced tariffs, opened previously protected sectors in agriculture, energy, textiles, and automotive trade. It opened up the U.S.-Mexico border to trade in services with specific rules in finance, transportation and telecommunication. It set rules on government procurement and intellectual property rights. As well as set specific safeguards, including how to deal with subsidies and unfair practices; it set up procedures for dealing with private commercial or agricultural disputes; and it set up a process for dealing with NAFTA implementation concerns. When in 1995, Mexico was forced to reduce the value of the peso by 50% causing a huge recession from its booming economy, but with NAFTA being instituted in earlier it muted the recession and the recovery was much faster. With the peso appreciating in value by ¼ in terms against the dollar, all of this because of NAFTA and their involvement in Mexico. Not only has the peso increased in value but so has the two-way trade between the United States and Mexico, which has increased 113% in a 5-year time period.
